# Comfy CLI Troubleshooting Guide

> Fix common Comfy CLI setup problems: missing git, Python and virtual environment requirements, headless Comfy Cloud auth, and GPU library installs.

Most Comfy CLI failures come from a missing prerequisite or a setup step that was skipped. Check the items below before reporting a problem.

## Prerequisites

Comfy CLI needs [git](https://git-scm.com/downloads) installed on your system. Install it first, so `comfy install` and `comfy update` can clone ComfyUI and its custom nodes.

## Install ComfyUI in a virtual environment

`comfy install` installs ComfyUI into the active Python environment, which must be Python 3.9 or newer. Create and activate a virtual environment before running it:

```bash theme={null}
python3 -m venv comfy-env
source comfy-env/bin/activate
comfy install
```

## Install GPU libraries separately

`comfy install` does not install CUDA or ROCm. Install the GPU libraries that match your hardware before launching, otherwise `comfy launch` starts a ComfyUI that cannot use your GPU.

## Set up Comfy Cloud without a browser

`comfy setup` signs in through your browser, so it cannot complete in CI, a devcontainer, or a headless server. Pass an API key and run non-interactive instead:

```bash theme={null}
comfy setup --where cloud --api-key comfyui-... --non-interactive
```
